how to get to Sapporo
If you’re here, you are probably coming to ski/snowboard, go to the annual snow festival or relax at a ryokan in the mountains. If you are coming from Tokyo, you can take the Shinkansen to Sapporo or fly into New Chitose Airport (CTS). I do not recommend taking the Shinkansen unless you’re stopping in between stops prior to Sapporo because it is roughly 8 hours one way. If you decide to fly, it is roughly 1 1/2 hours and will also make more sense financially.
Taking the Shinkansen is roughly $195 USD ONE WAY, while flying is about $120 USD economy, $210 business and $350 first class. Keep in mind prices can change but that is what was shown when I Googled it for a month out. I suggest avoid traveling during peak season as rates for both flights and hotel can increase dramatically.
WHEN TO GO TO SAPPORO
As I mentioned earlier, going to Sapporo will depend on the reason. Most will come here for the cold snowy weather which is quite fabulous while some especially locals will go to Sapporo during Summer months as it’s a lot cooler even during this period. I would like to suggest the Sapporo Snow Festival that usually happens the first week of February. Check with the websites to see when it happens each year.

where to stay
You’ll want to stay as close to Odori Park as possible while being near a station. For the most part, a lot of hotels are near Odori Park so no need to street. I would book as early as you can confirm your dates to lock in the price but check in periodically as prices may drop. Just make sure you can get a full refund which is normally the case 24 hours prior to check in.
I stayed at Hotel Abest in Sapporo which I thought was okay. It didnt have central air in the room but to be fair its Sapporo where its already quite cold. My suggestion is to stay someone inexpensive since you’ll probably be out and about all day. Find something comfortable and inexpensive like APA Hotels though Hotel Tokyu Stay Sapporo Odori may be nicer to stay as well. Links provided down below!
